Lime - timelessly precious
Since people started to build or refine materials lime has always been an indispensable raw material. The Egyptian pyramids consist of hewed limestone blocks, the joints made of lime mortar. The same is true for the "Chinese Wall" which additionally stands on lime stabilized soil.
Finally, the Romans improved technology developing the methods for a more rational and efficient lime manufacture. Then, in medieval times, the know how of the ancient civilizations got largely forgotten.
In the Glarus region, more particularly in Schwanden, industrial lime burning started in the 19th century, and it was not before the beginning 20th century that the Elggis quarry in Netstal was opened - "Chalchi" was born.
