Lime - a piece of history

Millions of years ago, when a sedimentary rock was formed from shells and skeletons of mussels, corals and other sea animals, and after it was finally consolidated the limestone-containing layers originated little by little. When the idea of time had not yet been invented giant rock plates irresistibly shoved against and over each other. Under vast powers the alps towered up. During this process the lime layers of the ancient sea grounds moved to the earth surface.

At the Elggis near Netstal something astonishing happened: The lime layers evolved in reverse sequence, i.e. the deepest layers came to the top.

This geological particularity is the reason for Netstal's high lime purity. The limestone near Netstal contains more than 98 % of calcium carbonate.
